Vildagliptin 50mg combined with Metformin 1000mg from Jan Aushadhi is a widely used oral medication to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes by improving insulin release and reducing glucose production, helping to prevent serious diabetic complications.
How It Works
Metformin (1000mg) lowers blood sugar mainly by reducing glucose production in the liver, delaying glucose absorption in the intestines, and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin.
Vildagliptin (50mg) is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases levels of incretin hormones, which enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion and reduce glucagon secretion. This leads to better control of both fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. Together, they complement each other to provide effective glycemic control.
Uses
Mainly prescribed for type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and monotherapy with either drug alone are insufficient.
Helps reduce risks associated with diabetes such as kidney damage, vision problems, nerve damage, heart disease, and stroke.
It is usually used along with a proper diet and regular physical activity to optimize blood sugar control.
Dosage and Administration
Typically taken twice daily, with meals, to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
The dose may be adjusted by the doctor based on blood sugar levels, kidney function, and overall health.
Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed.
Regular monitoring of blood sugar, kidney, and liver functions is important during treatment.
Common Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, tremors, and an upset stomach.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is less common with this combination but can occur, especially if taken with other antidiabetic medications like insulin or sulfonylureas. Symptoms include sweating, shakiness, irritability, and hunger.
Rare but serious risks include lactic acidosis, characterized by muscle pain, difficulty breathing, extreme tiredness, and stomach pain, which requires immediate medical attention.
Precautions and Contraindications
Not recommended for patients with severe kidney or liver problems, heart failure, or history of lactic acidosis.
Should be avoided in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use, as safety data are limited.
Alcohol should be avoided as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis and interferes with blood sugar control.
Inform your healthcare provider of all other medications to avoid drug interactions.
Special Warnings
The medication is not recommended for children under 18 years due to lack of sufficient safety data.
Elderly patients require careful kidney function monitoring during treatment.
Discontinue before surgery or diagnostic procedures involving iodinated contrast agents and restart only after kidney function is confirmed normal.
Important Advice
Maintain your prescribed diet and exercise plan to enhance medication effectiveness.
Never double-dose if you miss a tablet; take it as soon as you remember unless it’s near the next dose time.
Carry a fast-acting sugar source (like glucose tablets or fruit juice) in case of hypoglycemia.
Report any persistent or severe side effects to your doctor immediately.
This combination medication therefore provides a comprehensive approach to managing type 2 diabetes by targeting multiple pathways responsible for high blood sugar, while requiring careful medical supervision to ensure safety and effectiveness.
